Draft Marks

Weighting a ship?

Just imagine, weighing a ship, that size, has no scale that can handle it!

But I answer you with a YES! You: You crazy, boy?

Well, basically the scale used is the water in which the ship is sailing, with the PRINCIPLE OF ARCHIMEDES.

If you’ve ever seen a ship up close, you may have noticed that there are some numbers drawn on the side of the ships, on the bow, amidship and stern, these are the well-known Draft Marks.

By reading these numbers, there are 6 readings in total, some calculations are made with some additional information from the ship’s particulars, and then the ship’s displacement is discovered.

Each number and its spacing are 100mm. Readings are carried out, corrections are applied, the vessel’s trim and heel are discovered, so the Official in charge can take steps to place or remove ballast, rearrange the cargo and know the ship’s displacement.

Look at the figure as an example, approximately: Draft at the bow = 2.65m; Draft at midship = 2.8m and Draft at the stern = 2.87. This only on one side, values on the other side would still be needed.

Interactive application

The application built in MS Excel is an analysis of the weight of a ship to discover its draft marks readings. The user interface permits input and selects different values to understand and analyze the ship’s behavior.
