University’s final project

The design of a vessel is premised on its operation needs. In the specific case of sailing yachts, there is a clear distinction between cruising or racing yachts. This distinction has a direct influence on its hull geometry, which may be difficult to define in its initial phases of the project. The wide range of possibilities for hull lines generates uncertainties of the best geometry to achieve its main purpose. Few development tools have as an entry parameter the purpose of the sailing yachts, whether be cruise or racing one. Thus, this study works on the development of a tool to generate the offset table of sailing yachts, having as entry information the main dimensions and its operation purpose.

The tool was programmed using Microsoft Excel and its application Visual Basic for Application (VBA), implementing the numeric calculation of the parametric curves of the ship and its coefficients’ analysis. The tool enables to saving the offset table as a “txt” file, based on the yacht’s dimensions, so the user may be able to import it into a geometrical modeling tool to generate the surface and follow with his project. This tool shows to the user the main hydrostatics values of the hull and a preview of the hull form. Comparing the results with values from literature and with a design of a real offshore racing yachts value, the conclusion is that this tool “Ventum” may be used for development of the initial design of sailing yachts on academic and research environment.
